Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation

The Peter Emily International Veterinary Dental Foundation (PEIVDF) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 by Dr. Peter Emily. A human dentist by training, Dr. Emily was a trailblazer in veterinary dentistry, shaping it into the specialized field we recognize today. For 50 years, he traveled the world, lecturing to veterinarians and performing dental procedures on exotic animals. He performed dental procedures on more animal species than most people will see in a lifetime, usually as a charitable service. He remained a pivotal figure in PEIVDF until his passing in 2022 at age 90.

Thousands of exotic animals live in sanctuaries across the USA and the world. Many of these sanctuaries function on a limited budget that does not include dental care. Regrettably, many of these animals have faced neglect or abuse. Many also have painful, long-standing, or life-threatening dental problems. PEIVDF’s core mission is to provide advanced veterinary dental care to exotic animals in sanctuaries, zoos, and animal parks worldwide. These services are provided to sanctuaries at no charge. Equally as important is the mission to train new generations of veterinary dentists in the management of oral diseases in exotic species.

The clinicians, staff, and board members of the foundation volunteer their services, time, and travel expenses. All participants are here because of love and dedication to the care of these animals. The foundation relies on charitable, tax-deductible donations to sustain their missions. PEIVDF offers individuals the opportunity to attend their operations in person. The foundation provides learning opportunities for veterinarians and veterinary technicians, and welcomes those wishing to become involved with the foundation.

Dr. Hewitt has been a part of the PEIVDF since 2009 and serves on the Board of Directors.
