Periodontal disease is the most common type of oral disease seen by veterinarians and affects most animals by age 3. Without appropriate treatment, periodontal disease can contribute to organ damage, tooth loss, oronasal fistula formation, and pathologic mandibular fracture. Early and regular treatment of periodontal disease can help to prevent serious dental consequences. Major teeth with more advanced periodontal disease can be treated surgically, to preserve them longer. This 8-hour lecture and laboratory course will teach the basics of periodontal disease, non-invasive periodontal treatment, surgical periodontal treatment, and maintenance of affected teeth. Open to veterinarians only.
